 Bayboro –

A Southern Hospitality Village. Bayboro, spelled Bayborough in the beginning, was settled long before it was incorporated in 1881. The name Bayboro may be a derivative from Bay River which was probably named for the sweet bay tree Magnolia Virginiana that flourished in the area. Bayboro is the oldest incorporated town in Pamlico County and became the county seat in 1877. Bayboro is a residential, agricultural, fishing and commercial community located at the upper end of Bay River in Pamlico County. Its location is based on waterborne commerce and commercial fishing associated with the town’s Bay River Harbor during Colonial times. During that time, waterway traffic was the main source of moving goods and commerce to Pamlico County. Bayboro’s commercial base and central county location were key factors in the town being designated as the county seat. Today, the economy of Bayboro is well diversified with its core consisting of a courthouse and consolidated government offices. There is a collection of small supporting businesses, homes, churches, public schools, Pamlico Community College extension/Cosmetology Center and The Leland J. Brinson Law Enforcement Facility. The Town of Bayboro is a unique blend of old and new, history and progress.  Dr. Saint Elmo McCotter practiced medicine from the early 1900’s and his historic home is here. Water sports such as fishing, canoeing  and kayaking await the recreational enthusiastic in Bayboro.
